Identify When You’re In A State Of Emergency

Are you aware of your own level of well-being to a point where you can identify when you’re in a state of emergency?

I’m not talking about an external life-threatening emergency here, I’m referring to the heightened physiological and psychological nature of your mind and body when you are in a default state of stress.

If you read my last blog about “what to do when your chalice spills” you will begin to see a pattern forming around the need to be Self-Full. “I AM Self-Full” is the 6th Principle of The Grail Path and asks that you take responsibility for your own health and well-being and put yourself at the top of your own priority list. Between that post and this one, there is a gap… I was preparing for my Sacred Chalice to spill. And spill it did, just a few short days after I published the post, when my mum passed to spirit after a long battle with ill health.

Because of the pre-work I did, I have been handling bereavement pretty well but I have noticed something that I was completely unaware of before: I have been living in a constant state of stress and low-level anxiety for the last 2 years that my mum was unwell and my body is still fixed in that state of emergency.

This is how it is showing up for me:

  • increased mind chatter
  • poor concentration
  • inability to relax or switch off
  • disturbed sleep and waking with anxious expectation
  • a feeling of imminent deadline or imagined disciplinary force
  • exhaustion and overwhelm and now
  • debilitating migraines and dizziness!

Just try to understand for a moment that I am a spiritual teacher, a holistic energy therapist and I published a book on recovering from stress and burnout… If I can experience this type of stress as a result of unconsciously slipping into my sympathetic nervous system (fight, flight or freeze response to stress), then how can you identify when you’re in a state of emergency? Well, are any of the above symptoms feeling familiar to you?

The reason I am aware of it now is that the reason for my stress is no longer valid. I don’t need to keep my phone on at night in case of an emergency call, there is no risk of mum being whisked off to hospital at a moment’s notice, I’m no longer responsible for the well-being of another who cannot care for themselves and there is no deadline (that I haven’t imposed on myself). My need for high alert has ended… and now it has, the symptoms are being exposed for what they are.

In my conversations with my angels this week and in some of my own personal oracle readings, I have been receiving a repetitive message: “Reconnect your mind to your body.” This is a signal for me to refocus on my holistic well-being and give some love and attention to my sacred physical vessel, which is ultimately the temple and vehicle for my soul. You cannot walk the Grail Path without embracing this holy trinity of mind, body and spirit and that’s why I am returning to the practices laid out in the Self-Full Living Workbook, based on my recovery from the debilitating effects of stress over 15 years ago.

You can grab a copy from Amazon if you recognise any of my symptoms in yourself or you just want to live a life where your own well-being is honoured as sacred too.

What To Do When Your Chalice Spills

There is one fundamental truth to the Grail Path that cannot be avoided when living a physical life, (which if you are reading this then presumably you are): You cannot keep the Grail. It will inevitable be upturned at some point in your life and you will need to begin to refill it from the bottom up. But do you know what to do when your chalice spills?

Loss of vital lifeforce

Put in plain language, life throws you curve balls in the form of challenges, endings, illness and a whole host of other shocks and spills that will cause your world to rock internally and transform right before your eyes. These are moment when you aren’t sure you can go on. It is certain that life will not allow you to go on the way you were before, because now your reality has shifted irrevocably and you have to learn a whole new set of rules in unfamiliar circumstances. Before any of that can happen in your outer reality, you have to heal the initial spill of your vital lifeforce …and that is going to take a beat.

When shock shows up in your world and your Grail cup is upturned, it’s a usual response to try to do one of two things:

  • Attempt to gather the scattered contents and get back what was lost or
  • Fill the chalice with anything and everything inappropriate to distract from the emptiness and avoid feeling that loss.

A more effective method

Let me just reassure you that neither of these responses is wrong… there is only instinct and survival under these circumstances, but there are more effective ways of recovery.

Try to understand that the sacred chalice is never completely empty even when it appears all is lost. There is residue clinging to the sides. Depending on how much self- work you have done on your path, that residue will either be supportive or detrimentaal to whatever you choose to refil the cup with. That residue is in the form of memories, beliefs, gratitude or regret for example. You first need to give the mind, body and spirit an opportunity to process the residue and that means being brave enough to stay empty for a time.

Honouring the void

Staying empty means leaving a void and that void is filled with healing nurturing potential. The longer we can honour the space, the more complete the healing, before we begin to refill the claice with new stuff. This doesn’t mean pushing away the offer of nurturance and support, but it does mean rejecting the more socailly acceptable distractions (usually offered by others to alleviate their own discomfort around your situation). this is going to take forgiveness and firm boundaries.

Instead, this is what to do when your chalice spills:

  • Give yourself permission to feel
  • Give yourself permission to be
  • Focus on the basics of self-care (Self-Full Living)
  • Don’t apologise for yourself
  • Don’t minimise your emotions to honour the feelings of others
  • Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s
  • Ask for help from appropriate sources
  • Take time out until you are ready
  • Honour the sacred redirection the Divine is offering

The chalice often spills out of the blue. Occasionally we are aware of the incoming changes, but can do nothing to prevent them from occurring. The more you understand the Principles of The Grail Path the more tools you have to anchor your faith in your ability to heal and set the Chalice back upright, ready to refill after a time. You will be to go on to do the great things the Universe created you for, don’t doubt that for a second.

A Self-Full Day In The Life Of…

I know how lucky I am to be able to choose my own daily routine and that it gives me the ability to build Self-Full Living into my schedule as a way of life. I made a conscious choice to put my own well-being at the top of my to-do list a long time ago, after suffering burn-out and chronic fatigue back in 2004, putting me in hospital and rendering me mentally, emotionally and physically incapable of noticing the blessings in my own life. But what exactly does a Self-Full day in the life of a spiritual teacher look like?

I can’t speak for any other spiritual teacher out there to be honest, but one thing I expect we have in common is the ability to recognise that spirituality isn’t a part of your day, it is woven through every aspect of your life. It is not something your do it is something you are.

I’ve never been a morning person. Well actually that’s not true. I am at my best in the morning. I am most connected to my own wisdom, to my own guides and angels, I gather the most inspired ideas and connect the dots from all the synchronicities and insights I receive first thing in the morning. What I mean when I say I’m not a morning person is that I don’t do socialising, human interaction and banal chatter early in the morning. My day is organised so that I rarely even venture downstairs before 11am and I certainly do not entertain client appointments or consultations before lunchtime.

Though you may notice I’m on social media early in the morning, that’s usually my time to scan a few select pages and people that I follow who have pristine, positive and spiritually curated timelines that help to maintain my own positive mindset. I take the time to journal my dreams and my intentions for the day, to acknowledge what I’m grateful for and to explore elusive emotions. I also physically write a prayer to the universe each morning to focus my intention further.

The next action I take is the most important action of my Self-Full day: I shower!

I know, most of us do (hopefully), but for me, the shower is the place where I meditate and converse with the angels. It is the place where I cleanse, not only my body of any grime that might be lurking, but also my energy field and my chakras of any negativity or foreign energy. I take time to acknowledge what parts of my physical body require extra care today, for example: where I feel stiff or uncomfortable, and I check in with what my mind, body and spirit require from me. I also feel into any areas of my energy that feel blocked or sticky, all the while asking the angels for help in transmuting that disharmony or instructing me in the actions I may need to take to heal it through the day. Only when all this is done and I’ve chosen the outfit that best fits my mood… (usually comfy casual to full on pj’s), do I start my day.

I have to laugh at that idea, because often my day started anything up to 3 hours prior… but only now am I ready to interact with the world.

After I eat breakfast (actually usually lunch to rest of you,) I begin creating from an inspired mind, feeling fuelled up and ready to go. I’m now ready to create content, prepare and teach classes, conduct client calls, record and edit videos for my YouTube channel and serve in a way that also nourishes me whilst also hoefully nourishing others.

Other things I keep on my daily to-do list:

  • I take time to cook fresh meals and consciously take breaks to eat them
  • I’m mindful of how much water I drink throughout the day
  • I’ve started to reward myself for a day at the desk with a long, walking meditation. (It serves to add exercise, time in nature to reset and clear my mind, into my day).
  • I do an oracle card reading for myself to help gain clarity and direction for my work, my life, my current projects… anything that might benefit from a wider perspective.
  • I make time to connect with friends, family and loved ones, even if it’s just a quick text.
  • I have a wind-down routine that includes gentle yoga or tai chi, more journalling about how my day went, any resistance felt, what I discovered throughout the day.

Admittedly it means that I often work late into the evening, but because I do what I love, I love what I do.

If you are trying to create balance and a routine that nurtures your mind, body and spirit, you have to build non-negotiable patterns that support your well-being into your life. Do I take on too much or get out of balance? Hell yes, I did that just last week! I’m not always mindful of when I’m saying yes to too much or not fiercely protecting my boundaries or worse still, placing my energy into things that don’t give back in some way, so don’t freak out if you haven’t cracked it yet. You can start today by doing an inventory of what actions nurture you and what depletes you on a daily basis and go from there.

Being Self-Full Is The Most Difficult Choice

Last week was a week of firsts for many people I’m regularly in contact with, launching themselves way beyond the outer limits of their comfort zones into undiscovered country. I was no different. It got me thinking about when being Self-Full is the most difficult choice.

To others bravery, beforehand, can look like stupidity, absurdity and even recklessness, but on the otherside of the leap, once you launch yourself from the safety of the nest and realise you are flying, that’s when the world looks up and acknowledges how brave you were.

Self-Full Living is about managing your well-being and it could easily be mistaken for taking the gentle option by playing safe. But there is no safety in stagnancy and definitely no self-care in playing small. Sometimes it is the most difficult choices, requiring the most courageous acts, that rescue us from our patterns and set us free from the prisons that have slowly been sapping our vital force.

Self-Full Living is about realising you have a problem that is detrimental to your spiritual, mental, or physical health. It is identifying a habit, behaviour, relationship or environment that is dismantling the life you’ve built around you or crushing you at soul level. But it is more importantly about what you choose to do when you recognise it… do you say “that’s too hard” and do nothing, or do you make the difficult choice and be brave?

Being Self-Full is the most difficult choice because it often requires sacrifice and it often requires you to move away from what feels familiar or what feels comfortable.

Self-Full Living is about embracing self-care, but you may find that long-term well-being requires short-term pain.

My question to you is this: are you willing to launch yourself out of the nest and be the bravest version of you, so that your well-being can recover and your soul can once again shine?

What firsts are you bravely stepping into this week?

Let me know in the comments.

I’m Goin Nowhere Without This One Thing

I can’t even begin to tell you how my last week has been going… one day so hectic that I was juggling two laptops, one video editing and uploading, the other creating a blog post whilst also balancing a paintbrush upcycling my office desk, all in the relative chaos of a room makeover, but only half of the organisational implementation story that is going into planning 2020 at Jo Jerodene HQ (also known as my kitchen/diner). It was only when I stopped the process on Thursday night that realised: I’m going nowhere without this one thing…

On Thursday evening’s I teach a small group of ladies who have been with me for years, on their continuing spiritual development journey. Its a very relaxed group and also allows me to dive deep into my own spiritual practice, especailly important when I’ve been neck high in 3D business planning and the mundane world all week. This week was especially poignant though because I found myself in meditation slamming the brakes on the metaphorical train I was riding, refusing point blank to go anywhere without God!

Whatever your name for your higher power is… (normally I opt for the less formal “Big G”), when your world and your business revolves around your spiritual principles and the deep soul lessons you’ve learned from connecting with the higher realms, angels and messengers of the Divine, to suddenly be propelled into a high intensity level of logic and action in a very real-world form, is really disconcerting. No wonder I pulled the emergency brake to check Spirit was on board with the changes I’m making.

The clear message I got from Big G was: “I want you on that train!”

We forget sometimes that the Divine flows through everything, no matter how seemingly 3rd dimensional or how 5th, 6th, 7th… and on. Principle 1 of The Grail should be reminder enough, it says: “I AM God.” So the fact that I’m on the train means that Big G is on the train… in fact Big G is the bloody train and if it’s hurtling at 6 million miles an hour toward a bright new horizon then its because Spirit deems it so.

The trick is to find balance between the daily hustle and the more reverent spiritual practices, between the doing and the being, between the service and the Self-Full Living. Just taking that short excursion into meditation gave me the clearest indication of my soul’s truth and what I needed most. That’s what it means to be truly soul-led.

If you need help balancing your daily grind with your your Self-Full mind, body & soul practice then why not give my book “Self-Full Living Workbook” a whirl. It’s available through Amazon via the link.
