I know how lucky I am to be able to choose my own daily routine and that it gives me the ability to build Self-Full Living into my schedule as a way of life. I made a conscious choice to put my own well-being at the top of my to-do list a long time ago, after suffering burn-out and chronic fatigue back in 2004, putting me in hospital and rendering me mentally, emotionally and physically incapable of noticing the blessings in my own life. But what exactly does a Self-Full day in the life of a spiritual teacher look like?
I can’t speak for any other spiritual teacher out there to be honest, but one thing I expect we have in common is the ability to recognise that spirituality isn’t a part of your day, it is woven through every aspect of your life. It is not something your do it is something you are.
I’ve never been a morning person. Well actually that’s not true. I am at my best in the morning. I am most connected to my own wisdom, to my own guides and angels, I gather the most inspired ideas and connect the dots from all the synchronicities and insights I receive first thing in the morning. What I mean when I say I’m not a morning person is that I don’t do socialising, human interaction and banal chatter early in the morning. My day is organised so that I rarely even venture downstairs before 11am and I certainly do not entertain client appointments or consultations before lunchtime.
Though you may notice I’m on social media early in the morning, that’s usually my time to scan a few select pages and people that I follow who have pristine, positive and spiritually curated timelines that help to maintain my own positive mindset. I take the time to journal my dreams and my intentions for the day, to acknowledge what I’m grateful for and to explore elusive emotions. I also physically write a prayer to the universe each morning to focus my intention further.
The next action I take is the most important action of my Self-Full day: I shower!
I know, most of us do (hopefully), but for me, the shower is the place where I meditate and converse with the angels. It is the place where I cleanse, not only my body of any grime that might be lurking, but also my energy field and my chakras of any negativity or foreign energy. I take time to acknowledge what parts of my physical body require extra care today, for example: where I feel stiff or uncomfortable, and I check in with what my mind, body and spirit require from me. I also feel into any areas of my energy that feel blocked or sticky, all the while asking the angels for help in transmuting that disharmony or instructing me in the actions I may need to take to heal it through the day. Only when all this is done and I’ve chosen the outfit that best fits my mood… (usually comfy casual to full on pj’s), do I start my day.
I have to laugh at that idea, because often my day started anything up to 3 hours prior… but only now am I ready to interact with the world.
After I eat breakfast (actually usually lunch to rest of you,) I begin creating from an inspired mind, feeling fuelled up and ready to go. I’m now ready to create content, prepare and teach classes, conduct client calls, record and edit videos for my YouTube channel and serve in a way that also nourishes me whilst also hoefully nourishing others.
Other things I keep on my daily to-do list:
- I take time to cook fresh meals and consciously take breaks to eat them
- I’m mindful of how much water I drink throughout the day
- I’ve started to reward myself for a day at the desk with a long, walking meditation. (It serves to add exercise, time in nature to reset and clear my mind, into my day).
- I do an oracle card reading for myself to help gain clarity and direction for my work, my life, my current projects… anything that might benefit from a wider perspective.
- I make time to connect with friends, family and loved ones, even if it’s just a quick text.
- I have a wind-down routine that includes gentle yoga or tai chi, more journalling about how my day went, any resistance felt, what I discovered throughout the day.
Admittedly it means that I often work late into the evening, but because I do what I love, I love what I do.
If you are trying to create balance and a routine that nurtures your mind, body and spirit, you have to build non-negotiable patterns that support your well-being into your life. Do I take on too much or get out of balance? Hell yes, I did that just last week! I’m not always mindful of when I’m saying yes to too much or not fiercely protecting my boundaries or worse still, placing my energy into things that don’t give back in some way, so don’t freak out if you haven’t cracked it yet. You can start today by doing an inventory of what actions nurture you and what depletes you on a daily basis and go from there.
